As families made plans to travel and reunite for the upcoming Lunar New Year holidays, Leader Mutual Freight (LMF) was presented with a hairy challenge — one that involved reunifying a Taipei household with their fur baby from Shanghai.
Separated from family for the past six months, this pet qualified for aviation transport as live cargo. The owners had spent the past couple of months procuring the requisite paperwork for flying their dog back to Taipei, but the sizable heft of the steel shipping kennel (131*97*80cm), weighing 76 kilograms for transporting the large canine in a heated and ventilated cargo hold, proved to be too difficult for most airlines.
We reached out to our network of airlines in search of a carrier willing to take on the special project — and one heeded the call for a good Samaritan. Extensive negotiations included arranging for the dog to board the plane via special arrangement by modifying a standard ULD (Unit Load Device) with a PEB pallet to wheel the large crate into the plane’s pallet compartment instead of its bulk cargo belly for smaller pets. Since the PEB pallet was secured in a heated and ventilated area, the beloved canine flew in minimal discomfort.
Based on past experience processing live cargo for transnational transport, LMF had already prepared the pet’s forms for customs, identification papers, and other required paperwork. When this canine passenger was admitted to board, we immediately escorted the dog through all necessary medical checks and procured the inspection papers expediently; a week was all it took for LMF to clear customs and successfully help the dog board its flight.
LMF created a special task force to supervise the dog’s plane flight conditions, tending to the crate’s water and feed levels and accompanying the canine in its pre-boarding quarters of a temperature-controlled warehouse. The pet remained warm in 10-20℃ indoor weather until the plane took off at wintry dawn, arriving at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport just some 90 minutes later. The owners were able to visit their fur baby from afar before pet quarantine procedures began.
Apart from real-life location tracking of the steel kennel, the owners were able to observe their pet via a live camera feed throughout the Shanghai-Taipei expedition that aimed to minimize the adverse impact of flying upon the dog’s emotional and physical health. Working closely with the cargo terminal and airline crew, members of LMF’s Shanghai branch carried out this request as compassionate professionals and as witnesses to the timeless bond between animals and humans.
Over half a century ago, LMF was founded to help distribute Taiwan’s fresh produce and live plants across the world. LMF avows to continue upholding integrity and compassion in meeting the demands of our esteemed clients and allaying the concerns of our trusty partners.
